“Who was that?” she asked when I made it to the peninsula, rejoining her in the kitchen.

Celeste’s condo was the absolute sexiest design. The architecture was breathtaking. A mix of stone and glass two-story walls incased the triplex unit. The whole place took on a nature theme: running fountains in the living room and entryway, manicured greens on the other side of each glass. Right over the kitchen was an open loft that was great for entertaining. The property was managed well; a co-op she purchased ten years ago when she said she realized she wouldn’t be having children.

My eyes skirted around and landed on my Ugg Chickeree slippers under barelegs. “Shameeka.”“And what did she want?” she demanded.“To catch me up on her brother for some strange reason.” I breathed and rolled my eyes dramatically.

“Cut the bullshit, precious gem.” She’d caught on to my game, and I knew she had. I wasn’t very good at hiding things from her. But this was something I’d certainly been keeping to myself. The less she knew, the better off she was. I didn’t want to implicate any more people. “Let me tell you: that Danny may have been around lately, but the only reason why is because of you. I don’t know what the hell the two of you are in cahoots about, but it sounds potentially dangerous. I’ve been very clear with him on if whatever it is gets you in any legal trouble, I’m killing his ass and moving in the cell next to yours. Are we clear!” Her darkly lined eyes challenged me.
